CET4: The necessity of developing social skills for college students

Today on campus, you can hear the words “She Niu” and “She Kong” (good at and not good at social skills) from time to time when encountering associating with people. Many can shoot the breeze with a pleasurable chit chat and end up calling more “friends” while still quite a few throw the chance into embarrassed silence.

Notwithstanding our upbringing and characters that we took shape at an early age, developing social skills can be vital to how far we will go in the future. To be fair, few have been taught how to, to a large extent, as we were asked to focus on higher school marks rather than interpersonal skills.

Yet again, the significance of developing social skills is beyond description there for real. Comprehensive development of an individual encompasses far more than working skills, among which, no one can leave without communicating with people. EQ, more decisive to personal success, is a key building block of social skills. Getting on well bring a wide range of friends but the merits of higher social skills go beyond that: You may seize more opportunities, establish larger network and at workplace, a wider path for promotion. Harmonious and healthy interpersonal relationship is closely knitted through social skills, not to mention a long-lasting romance.

In short, we students first must come to realize how social skills mean to our personal success so that we shall seize every opportunity when encountering scenes with people, poke the head out of the shell, and participate. One good piece of advice is that we take the mind off emojis, sit underneath a tree and strike up a heart-to-heart lengthy coffee talk with a group of people, and we will be more than surprised how many “friends” we will get over the four years that will undoubtedly shape our life, which textbooks don’t give.

The necessity of developing social skills for college students

Among college students, there is a heated debate over whether they need to commit time and energy to developing social skills. Many believe that such skills are not as important as the study of major courses, while some have the idea that developing them is of great necessity. As for me, the latter is more reasonable.

There are a range of reasons accountable for my point of view. Firstly, college students with great social skills usually have more opportunities at schools. They are more likely to be noticed by teachers, win some contests, and seize various opportunities. Therefore, they are more confident than their classmates who are shy and lack such skills. Moreover, when they graduate and enter the workplace, fantastic social skills can help them rapidly create a good impression on their bosses and colleagues, which is beneficial for the career development. Besides, in their daily life, social skills can help them make more friends and expand social ties.

In sum, developing social skills is of great necessity for college students. Not only do these skills help them gain advantages when they compete with their peer groups, but also enable them to conquer difficulties, make more friends and enrich their life.
